Adding Colour to Black & White Lineart

A tutorial that will teach you an easy way to add colour to a black and white image or lineart in Photoshop.

For this tutorial, I'm using an exerpt from the Manga version of "Durarara". Comic/Manga strips that are in black and white are great
practice for this, and are also very suitable. You can also use any black and white image, or your own lineart.

Open the image in photoshop, and make sure the mode is set to "RGB". You can change this by going to Image > Mode > RGB colour.

Afterwards create a new layer (shortcut key shift+ctrl+n),and set it to "colour burn".

Select the brush tool, and set it to a drop shadow brush that is large, unless you plan to add colour in specific place and in detail. 'But for a quick splash of a single colour, keep the brush large. Set your foreground colour to the one you wish to splash onto your image.

Brush over your image and you will start to notice the colour of your brush added to the image instead of black.

To replace the white, create a new layer, and set it to "linear burn", change your brush colour and brush over it.

If you want to have more of a "single tone" effect, and want the colour to be more invasive, create a new layer and set it to pin light and fill it with a colour of your choice.

You can add textures, or hunk brushes on for nifty colour variations. Just make sure you put them on different layers and play with the Layer modes.
